Pivot Shift Test (Knee)

The pivot shift test is used to examine a knee that gives way. To perform this test, support the leg at the ankle and flex the patient’s knee. Place your hand by the patient’s fibula and extend the knee while supporting the tibia on the lateral side with slight valgus strain. Apply strong valgus force. A positive test is sudden reduction of the displaced tibia at 30 degrees of flexion.
