Sacroiliac Joint Compression Tests

The open and closed book tests are used to evaluate SI joint dysfunction. To perform this test, place the heel of both hands over the patient’s ASIS at the same time. Apply force medially for a closed book and apply force downward and laterally for an open book. Alternatively, this test can be performed with the patient in the side-lying position by applying downward force to the palms over the anterolateral or upper part of the patient’s iliac crest.
