What is the evidence for manual and manipulative therapy in the treatment of adhesive capsulitis?

Patient Population:

Treatments identified in the studies included; HVLA manipulation, end-range mobilization, midrange mobilization and mobilization with movement of the shoulder only and/or the shoulder girdle.

Comparison:

The authors identified 8 studies (including 4 RCTs, 2 controlled trials, and a single group pre-post design study) examining the use of MMT in the treatment of frozen shoulder.

Outcome:

ROM:  MMT appeared to be most beneficial in terms of ROM rather than pain or function/disability outcomes.  Most common MMT was mobilization of the shoulder.  Most common exercise prescribed appeared to be the pendulum.
