Lift Off Test

The lift off test is used to examine subscapularis integrity and strength. To perform this test, have the patient standing with their arm internally rotated behind their back. Then ask the patient to lift their forearm off of their back against examiner resistance. This exam can alternatively be performed actively. A patient with subscapularis rupture is unable to lift the dorsum of the hand off of their back.
