Modified Schober’s Test

This video demonstrates the modified schober’s test for lumbar spine range of motion. This test is often done to screen patients during evaluation of rheumatology disease and inflammatory back pain. Locate the dimples of venus (at the level of the PSIS) and make a mark at the mid-line of the spine. Then measure 10cm above this mark, and 5 cm below and make additional marks. While standing these marks are 15cm apart, however when one flexes forward this should expand to at least 20cm. If not, there may be a restriction in the patient’s lumbar spine range of motion.
