What is the evidence for manual and manipulative therapy in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the shoulder?

Summary

Patient Population:

No information was provided on the patient population.

Intervention:

The MMT techniques applied varied from study to study.

Comparison:

There were no studies identified that examined the effectiveness of MMT in the treatment of shoulder OA specifically; however, 3 studies (1 case report and 2 RCTs) did include (very few) patients with a diagnosis of OA of the shoulder.  These studies examined the use of MMT with or without the addition of exercise and the use of multimodal therapies in individuals with varied shoulder complaints or pain.

Outcome:

The authors note that this very minimal evidence is insufficient to provide any guidance with regard to the use of MMT in the treatment of OA of the shoulder.
